Scientists at Oregon State University have revealed that viral infections contribute to coral bleaching, which disrupts the crucial symbiotic relationship between corals and their algae. Their research, funded by the National Science Foundation, highlights the importance of understanding coral health as over 75% of reefs experienced significant bleaching between 2014 and 2017. The study analyzed viral metagenomes from coral pairs during a bleaching event in Mo’orea and found bleached corals had more eukaryotic viruses, including giant viruses, than non-bleached corals. This suggests viruses play a critical role in coral bleaching severity, impacting reef ecosystems significantly.
