Dominica is an independent island nation in the Eastern Caribbean, nestled between the French islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. It is not the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Greater Antilles.
One of Dominica's most popular and challenging activities, this arduous round-trip hike begins in the village of Laudat and crosses a wide range of terrain and vegetation. The climb up Morne Nichols is the first real test, along a narrow trail flanked by deep ravines, cresting at roughly 3,006 feet with panoramic views of both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts.
The trail then descends into the Valley of Desolation, where steaming fumaroles and warm mineral streams line the path, before a final stretch leads to the Boiling Lake itself - the world's second-largest actively boiling lake, with water temperatures exceeding 200°F. The return trip includes a climb back out of the valley, with a rewarding dip in Ti Tou Gorge to finish.
