Dominica is an independent island nation in the Eastern Caribbean, nestled between the French islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. It is not the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Greater Antilles.
Nestled in the misty Cloud Forest of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, near the village of Laudat, Freshwater Lake is the largest and second deepest of Dominica's four freshwater lakes, sitting at an elevation of roughly 2,500 feet. The semi-circular loop trail around the lake is a moderate, family-friendly hike, well suited to a wide range of walkers, and rewards visitors with sweeping interior and coastal views across the surrounding highlands.
The lake itself is fed by mountain streams and also supplies water to Titou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls, and the Roseau River, as well as the island's hydroelectric power. The area is a favorite for birdwatching, and the lush, high-elevation forest surrounding the lake offers a peaceful, atmospheric contrast to Dominica's coastal scenery.
