Jacko Steps

Overview

An adventure-packed activity beginning in the village of Bells, hiking down the Layou River Gorge to the historical Jacko Steps - carved into the mountainside by the Maroons (escaped slaves) in the 1760s as a secure route to and from their mountain hideouts. Named after Jacko, one of the most important Maroon chiefs and strategists during Dominica's Maroon wars, the trail involves a steep climb up the steps and through the rainforest before descending back down into the Layou River.

This activity involves river crossings and hiking, and is recommended only for strong swimmers without heart, back, or knee conditions.
